Our well-rounded educational program is enhanced by auxiliary classes that provide instruction in Spanish, Physical Education, Art, Band, Library, Music, and Technology.
Beginning at the preschool level, students study the Spanish language and traditions in order to foster a better understanding of the culture, geography, and history of various Hispanic countries. Students are expected to be able to listen, speak, read, and write in Spanish. The Spanish classes, Spanish Club, and Spanish Honor Society host special programs, such as celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe when the students share the story about Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego for our school and celebrate with a special Mass which includes a mariachi band and the participation of the Knights of Columbus.
An extensive fine arts curriculum develops children’s creative talents in Art, Music, and Band. Children learn about famous artists and composers and become competent in expressing themselves through media and songs. Our students also enjoy the creativity in our art program. There they learn drawing techniques, pottery making using a kiln, building sculptures, working with oil pastels and paints, and even submitting artwork to local competitions. The possibilities are endless in our art rooms!
SLCS produces major musical programs and plays as it encourages artistic expression. The SLCS band program is open to fifth through eighth-grade students. Members of our award-winning band program compete for spots in the Houston Area Private School Honor Band and the Junior High Regional Band. The superior-rated middle school band competes at band festivals within Texas.
The physical education program offers students a chance to excel athletically as it focuses on motor skills, good nutrition, and health as well as the development of lifetime fitness.
At St. Laurence Catholic School, a great deal of emphasis is placed on using technology to assist student learning. Additionally, the library/media center and two fully equipped computer labs are available for large group instruction and research. Computer literacy teachers instruct children in various applications, collaborative skills, computer skills, research techniques, basic coding skills, and Digital Citizenship, including Internet Safety. An integration specialist also assists teachers in integrating technology with instruction across the curriculum. Teachers maintain their own informational pages on FACTS or in Google Classroom and web links for communication with school families. By graduation, students are equipped with the life-long skills of word processing and keyboarding and are able to create presentations, spreadsheets, and multimedia applications using many different programs.
