February 26, 2020Today is the beginning of Lent and after receiving ashes at Mass this morning, we had a talk with some of the students about taking time to reflect and come up with ways to improve. As a Catholic School, it is part of our mission to, not only educate these students in academics but to reach their souls and ultimately try to get them to heaven. That task seems very daunting at times, but we are laying the foundation for making faith-based choices in the future when they are not under our care. This becomes increasingly more difficult as we see the lessening of manners and respect all around us. We talked about being a leader and stepping up when they saw something that was wrong. Unfortunately, so many of our children are scared to speak up and stand out for fear of retribution. We reminded them that Jesus’ message was spread by a small minority of those who weren’t afraid of persecution.
Today, we wear an outward sign of Lent on our foreheads, but we need to carry this message inside long after Ash Wednesday. Fr. Truong Son at Mass introduced the acronym L.E.N.T., which stands for Letting go of yourself, Entering in to Christ, being Nice to our Neighbors and Turning back to God. We all know what to say but do we put it into action? Actions are ultimately what get us to heaven; how we live and model Christ for others. Here are some great ideas from our parish bulletin if you are looking for ways to help your child at home.
Fr. Drew has asked the whole parish to fast from electronic entertainment (TV, social media, video games, etc) for three days, Wednesday, March 4, through Friday, March 6. Be intentional and discover new ways to spend time with God and one another. As a school, we will join in by trying to cut down on our technology those days. I am going to ask you to help by not emailing the teachers unless it is an emergency. For these three days, we will not be responding in order to allow the teachers more time planning and working with the students. We will also be shutting down our social media. If you need immediate assistance, as always, please contact the front desk.
In an attempt to strengthen our families and build more quality time together, Fr. Drew introduced a booklet called “Forming Intentional Families” to the parish this weekend HERE This wonderful resource was prayerfully written by Fr. Drew and the Pastoral Council. It contains some very simple ideas of things you can do at home to bring your family closer to God and each other. Fr.
